What are Carbon Offsets? Carbon offsets are measurable, verifiable reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are used to "compensate" for emissions produced elsewhere.
When a company or individual emits CO₂ (for example, from shipping or manufacturing), they can purchase carbon offsets to balance those emissions by funding projects that either: Remove CO₂ from the atmosphere (e.g., reforestation, direct air capture) -or-Prevent CO₂ from being emitted (e.g., renewable energy, methane capture, soil carbon storage).
